THE END GAME OF GAMES OF THRONES #GOT SEASON 8 EPISODE 6
The END GAME OF GAME OF THRONES
Games of thrones ended today and with the final episode all hopes for satisfaction also ended. The last season of Games of Thrones is very controversial.I wanted to love it all as I am fan of the show (I never read the books) but I'm sorry to say that it hasn't been the case. Many issues concerning this season have been brought up.This is my opinion on the subject.
First I would like to thank George RR Martin, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, Ramin Djawadi, all the cast and crew for giving us in my opinion the best TV show in history (Including season 8!).Thank you for your amazing work, thank you for all your blood, sweat and tears.
This post contains spoilers you've been warned!
The Pace : Fast and Furious!
The story seemed rushed. I think the brilliant work of George RR Martin needed at least 10 seasons to be told, we've never seen something like this before and think that if One serie deserved more time (and therefore budget ) It would have been GOT. If the showrunners were willing to move on, I think they should have tried to hand it over to another creative team because the end result of their hard work is far from bittersweet, it's just bitter! The cast and crew worked hard to the best of their abilities, the audience waited for a very long time and for many of us, It's a let down. I wanted to love it but I find myself wanting more and also better.
The Characters : Good players not enough game.
The best asset of this story is its characters, they are beautifully written and portrayed and they all became very real, the reduced number of episodes (seasons?) really impacted on the quality time we had with them and it's really a shame for a show that owes most of its success to great characters. We needed more screen time from many characters (Tyrion, Varys...) and mainly for one of the biggests villains: Queen Cersei. Lena Headey is a great actress and she managed to deliver a great performance with little lines and sporadic scenes.
Also, very brief on the scene: The one that used to symbolize to real threat.
Who was the Night King ? His story and trues motivations? Maybe another serie will explain everything.
The Feminism: From QUEEN to MADNESS
This story has a lot of great female characters: Ygritte, Lyanna, Arya, Brienne, Sansa, Lady Olenna, Margaery, Cersei, Missandei, Daenerys... They are brave, intelligent, capable, resilient, independent, powerful and more. So it's a tad disappointing to have two mad queens, the wowen who were in real positions of power, who could have ruled over the seven kingdom were really similar, both irrationnal, stubborn, entitled and not really empathetic. Yes their fathers were not better and if they were males the story would have seen two mad kings (different genders same treatment), but they're women and in today social context it involuntarly reinforces the stereotype that women can't rule over great kingdom(Yes Sansa is a queen in the North!).The Determinism: The Attribution Theory.
The message seemed to be about desconstructing a system, breaking the cycle, not to be judged by your parents actions, not to be condemned by your own actions, not to repeat the same mistakes, redemption and growth. It's why it's frustating to see main characters like Jaime, Daenerys, Jon... Go back at the end to what they were perceived to be in the beginning. Jaime was not a good person even if he made good changes at the inner core he stayed the same. Daenerys was not the mad king she wanted to free the people, to build a better world, break the wheel but she became the mad queen. And Jon who was a bastard who fought honorably and bravely against the stigma, for his family and people and became the king in the North, returns to been cast aside (even if he didn't wanted to be King, this is hard to swallow for a Jon's fan). No matter what you do, your role is predeterminded and you have to stick to it.
A TIME FOR WOLVES IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING ?
Are The Stark the bad guys?Don't get me wrong I love the Stark family but this season what I used to appreciate in them seemed to waver.
They are the good guys their actions are mostly justified by their desire to protect their people, avenge their family . They have suffered a lot and we wanted to see them win because they are not too ambitious, too arrogant, they are honorables to a fault and they are good people.
But they are also entitled like the Targaryen, the Lannister etc... The difference is that they love their people, people are not commodities for them, they love the North and the North loves them back. But they also think that they should be the rulers, even if they seem less ambitious and less corrupted they're still entitled. Even if they don't show it as much, they want power (Sansa and later Bran).
They are also worthy of trust or they used to be, because they've learned along the way to deceive and manipulate and betray others.
Honor is their bond, like Ned and Robb who were men of honor, the Starks used to be loyal and welcoming.
This season the Starks only showed distrust and ungratefulness (with no apparent reason at first) towards Daenerys who came to help them by putting all her forces on the frontline! This is just rude!
They were undermining her efforts and plotting against Daenerys even when she wasn't mad, and she grew mad as a result of their actions . And to thank her Jon lured and stabbed her.
Dany was entitled, cold and authoritarian, but she had good in mind and with a little more love, respect and gratitute, she could have been better, not as destructive as she was episode 5 (bigger than the NK and Cersei combined in 1 episode ? Wow! ). The show could have shown her worse traits in a better way and the audience would have digested it better. She wouldn't have been a good ruler but she was baddass conquerer. She deserved better! Foreshadowing yes! But we needed closure!
WINTER IS COMING
Power is power but Knowledge is Power!
Bran showed no interest in being the lord of Winterfell, now we know why. He needed more.If Bran (or the Three Eyed Raven) wasn't sitting on the throne at the end of got, if he only had helped the one sitting, it wouldn't have that bad (good?) taste.
He manipulated everybody and every situation to get to where he is. What was Bran doing ? I guess that he was tricking everyone to have them behave in a way that will have him ruling over six kingdoms. He had the cheat cards, he used them well and won the game.
That's genius right?
A Small council and one chosen king
Is it a real choice when you have someone who can control and manipulate everything and make you think that you did the right choice when in fact you did what he wanted. How much of Bran is a Stark or a human ? Why the Night King wanted to kill him so badly? Is he the puppets' master and are others only there to play his mind games? And how long is he going to live exactly ? The Three Eye Raven seems to live for a long time (indefinetely) plus he can "transfer" himself into another chosen one that will manipulate everything to become a King again and again. The Pack survives
I loved the Starks, they were the hope in the chaos and I was rooting for them along the way.At the end the "real" Starks all got what they wanted.
Sansa always wanted to be a queen, she is the queen. She is the one who learned the hard way how to play and she became a master. It was nice to see her grow and her intelligence was so refreshing.
Arya wanted to be something else and to discover (and conquer?) what is on the west of Westeros, she is on her way.
Arya is a Warrior, I loved her, her courage and determination. She knew how to pay her debts. She is a wild card.
And Bran didn't wanted to be King but he did everything to be the King so Yay!
The dealer, the master, the player.
He started by falling down the tower and I was horrified and he managed to climb to top and I am horrified, he was an lovely and innocent kid and he grew to be an egnimatic, bizarre and mysterious young/old men/surnatural being.
I have the feeling that I don't know him anymore. He is the real male heir of Ned Stark and he is the Three Eyed Raven , he wasn't my first, my second or my third choice even by default so I'm not satisfied by him sitting on the Throne.(and I am a little bit worried too). He is already omniscient and now he is King.
*Much love to the actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright
The Lone wolf dies- Jon the Sacrificial lamb
But what about Jon Snow ? Even if he didn't wanted to be a King (like Bran), he had to kill his love and take the black again. He will never rule, marry or have a descendance after all that he did for us ? Was he the sacrificial lamb because he was too much Targaryen and not enough Stark ? He deserved better! We deserved a better ending for him ! It would have nice to have choose his own destiny, and not to be the victim. This was Games of Thrones and even in the end we couldn't have nice things, maybe that's what we loved so much about it (or maybe not).
